Westminster City Council has extended its roll out of Wi-Fi services to include all 13 of its library buildings. BT carried out the installations using its Openzone system, as part of the wider Westminster Wireless City initiative.

Wireless flip phone to make WiFi calls

A lot of phones have popped up over the past year that allow a person to make phone calls over the Internet, provided the person is talking in a place that offers wireless Internet, or WiFi, access. But Santa Clara’s TelTel, in a partnership with D-Link, has put a new spin on that idea, offering a WiFi phone that has neither cords nor cordless “base stations.”

Toronto to blanket downtown with wireless access

Computer users in Toronto will be able to connect to the Internet from park benches, buses, or almost anywhere downtown later this year under a plan to turn the central city into a wireless fidelity, or Wi-Fi, zone. A city-owned agency, Toronto Hydro Telecom, will install transmitting and receiving units on light standards in a six-square-kilometer central-city hotspot over the next 10 months, making wireless Internet access available to anyone, anywhere within the zone.

Hopling deploys Wi-Fi hotspots in Dutch railway stations

Hopling Technologies, a Dutch company which specialises in wireless networking technologies, has completed the build of a Wi-Fi mesh network at 20 major stations and hotspot coverage of 50 train stations in the country, according to Telecompaper. Hopling is working with KPN, which is managing the project for the National Dutch Rail Authority.

Nokia To Produce Wi-Fi Phone

Nokia Corp. has unveiled a mobile phone that automatically switches between the Internet and standard cellular networks. The technology, known as Voice over Internet Protocol, has become popular because of its low cost, but most users are tied to a single computer.

EarthLink, Google Aim to Blanket San Francisco With WiFi

EarthLink and Google submitted a joint request for proposal (RFP) this week to bring San Francisco workers and residents free citywide wireless access.

As part of the deal, EarthLink would pay most of the projected US$15 million cost to build the wireless municipal network and would recover some of those costs by charging approximately $20 per month for Web access at higher speeds.

Wireless Internet Service Launch in the Quebec City-Windsor Corridor

VIA Rail Canada officially launched its Wireless Internet (Wi-Fi) access service on board its trains, in several stations and in Panorama lounges in the Québec City-Windsor corridor - a first in North America. The service is being offered starting today to all travellers between Montreal and Québec City and in many VIA 1 class cars
between Montreal-Toronto. By the end of this year, all VIA 1 and Comfort class travellers will be able to access the Internet on all VIA intercity trains in Ontario and Quebec.

Singapore creates first Wi-Fi park

3Com has announced that it has teamed with integrator iCELL Network to build Singapore’s first wireless network outdoor park, one-north Park at North Buona Vista Road. The park uses 3Com’s wireless technology to provide secure and seamless roaming Internet access.
